I detest country music, but I was killing time at the Union Hotel -a redneck immutable- when I first saw a woman walk in, and asked Bill Perasso ‘who is that English girl?’ He didn’t know, and neither did the other slimes, as she was fairly new to the area. Jennifer and I were practically married by the next day. The Union jukebox was playing Waltz Across Texas as she looked at me with stars in her eyes (and I in hers), and that became the hokey never wanted ‘our song’ forever. I recall a long, long night fighting all of Copenhagen while singing it through tears over and over when I heard she had died -weirdly enough, somewhere in Texas.

Now I think if you had been more Woody Allen with your great gags instead of mordid Lenny Bruce and made your fabulous pen and ink drawings I should be asking you for a loan by now but I realise there is a retort somewhere. I can wait…. mate X
